Moving the Family to Florianópolis: Healthcare, Education and Safety

For anyone relocating with children, the property price is barely half the decision. The other half are the questions every family asks: is it safe? what's the healthcare like? where will the kids study? Florianópolis answers all three well, and it's worth seeing that with the data.

Safety: the country's safest capital

The figure is emphatic: with 9.7 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants (2024 data, published in the Atlas da Violência 2026), Florianópolis is Brazil's safest capital. That figure is less than half the national average (around 20 per 100,000). The ranking of safest capitals is rounded out by Brasília (10.9), Curitiba (13.2), Goiânia (14.7) and São Paulo (15.3). And it's not a one-off year: the Island's rate fell about 33% over a decade, from 14.5 in 2014 to 9.7 in 2024.

Healthcare: universal SUS and leading hospitals

Brazil guarantees by Constitution a public health system, the SUS, free and universal for anyone on Brazilian soil — citizens, residents, temporary-visa holders and even tourists. To use it, a foreigner registers with a CPF, passport and proof of address (and the CRNM if already resident) and receives the Cartão Nacional de Saúde, usually the same day. In parallel, many opt for a private health plan, whose monthly cost varies with age and coverage — nationally it tends to fall, as a rough guide, in a broad range from a few hundred to over a thousand reais a month; it's worth requesting specific quotes.

On infrastructure, the city is well served. In the private sector, standouts include the Hospital Baía Sul (opened in 2005, with an intensive-care unit and robotic surgery), the Imperial Hospital de Caridade — over 235 years of history and around 192 beds — and the Hospital SOS Cárdio, specialized in cardiology and holding international Qmentum Diamond accreditation. In the public sector, the Hospital Universitário da UFSC — the only federal hospital in Santa Catarina — and the Hospital Governador Celso Ramos round out the network.

Education: a top-tier university and an international school

Florianópolis is home to UFSC (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina), one of the country's best universities — 8th in Brazil in the QS World University Rankings for Latin America 2026. For the children's schooling, the international reference is the Dual International School Florianópolis, authorized as an IB World School (International Baccalaureate) since 2017 — the only one in the city — with instruction in English and Portuguese. Bilingual schools' tuition is not published officially and varies quite a bit, so the sensible move is to contact each institution directly for up-to-date figures.

Quality of life and family neighborhoods

All of this rests on a quality of life the city has displayed for years: Florianópolis ranks among the Brazilian capitals with the highest Human Development Index. When choosing where to settle, foreign families tend to look at neighborhoods such as Jurerê (and Jurerê Internacional), Campeche, Lagoa da Conceição, Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Córrego Grande: quiet areas, with services, nearby beaches and a good educational offer. The combination of safety, nature and services is, ultimately, what explains why so many families choose to stay.
