Florianópolis as a place to live: beaches, nature, climate and sport

An island made for the outdoors

Before being a real-estate market, Florianópolis is a place to live outdoors. The island is famous for its beaches — people popularly speak of "42 praias", a convention of tourism promotion more than an official count; some tally quite a few more. What is certain is the variety: from the open sea in the east to the calm bays in the north.

A subtropical climate, mild all year

The climate is humid subtropical (Köppen Cfa). According to INMET's 1991–2020 climate normals, the mean annual temperature is around 21 °C, with January near 25 °C and July near 16.5 °C, and around 2,000 hours of sunshine a year. (It is worth confirming the decimals against INMET's primary source.) It is a climate that allows a beach life for much of the year and avoids extremes.

Protected nature right around the corner

The island combines development with a system of protected areas in several layers. The Parque Natural Municipal da Lagoa do Peri safeguards a large freshwater lagoon in the south; the Estação Ecológica de Carijós (ICMBio) protects the mangroves of Ratones and Saco Grande; and the APA do Anhatomirim, created in 1992, cares for a coastal-marine zone known for its botos-cinza (dolphins). Living here means having nature as a neighbor, not as a far-off outing.

Beach, sport and water

Florianópolis is also a capital of Brazilian surfing: the Praia da Joaquina and Praia Mole are its competition stages, and in March 2025 the World Surf League returned to Joaquina. Add to that sandboarding on the dunes of Joaquina and the hikes along the Costa da Lagoa. On certified beaches, in the 2025/2026 season the Lagoa do Peri earned the international Bandeira Azul (Blue Flag) seal, and Santa Catarina is the Brazilian state with the most certifications of this kind.

Recognized quality of life

Florianópolis's reputation as a place to live is backed up: it ranks among the best-positioned Brazilian capitals in human-development indices (its HDI, based on the 2010 census, is among the highest among capitals) and in social progress, and it often appears at the top for safety. These are rankings with different methodologies and years — it is best to read them with their date in mind — but they converge on a single idea: the island offers a quality of life hard to match in Brazil.
